Community & Family Services

At the core of the Central Labor Council is a commitment of service to members, their families and the community. Through a variety of programs under our Community Services Unit, the Central Labor Council is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for New York City workers and their families, and establishing viable relationships in communities across the city.

Our Programs

UNION CAREER DAY

Union Career Day is an ongoing project with high schools and community colleges throughout New York City that brings information to students about the labor movement and its various career opportunities.  Through this project, students engage in conversation with representatives from various local unions affiliated with the CLC and collect materials and information about career opportunities in the trade union movement, union apprentice programs, and the labor movement.

UNION SUMMER CAMP PROGRAM

Through our Union Summer Camp Program, the Central Labor Council facilitates summer camp opportunities for over 400 children of union members each year who attend one of our 18 pre-approved camps.  The CLC acts as a conduit between various camps and our affiliate unions, making it easier for members to make the right accommodations for their children over the summer.

UNION DAY OF CARING

The Union Day of Caring program coordinates organized labor's participation in community service projects.  All projects are designed to enhance and benefit communities or individuals in New York City, while utilizing the talents and teamwork of union members.

Union Day of Caring projects have included performing neighborhood clean-ups, day of companionship for the elderly, assisting at soup kitchens, and visiting nursing home residents or chronically ill adults and children in hospitals, along with various school mentoring programs.

RAPID RESPONSE

Our Rapid Response Team assists various unions whose members are recently displaced, or are faced with the potential of a looming strike.  Through our program, we have been successful in helping guide union members through the transition from work to unemployment and back to work again.  In addition, we have been able to provide readiness training to those who are still employed.

Below is a list of information and resources that we provide to aid in the transitions that many union members are faced with:

  • Unemployment Information
  • Legal Assistance
  • Housing Assistance
  • Job Training
  • Access to Affordable Healthcare
  • Emergency Food Networks
  • Additional Resource Packets
