Workers Memorial Day 2016

On Thursday, April 28th we joined with the New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health (NYCOSH) and the International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC) Local One to remember all workers who died on the job in 2015.

We gathered with representatives of unions, community groups, elected officials and clergy members near the RIU Plaza Hotel, the site of the fatal elevator accident that killed Air Force veteran turned elevator constructor Christian Ginesi.

NYC CLC President Vinny Alvarez, IUEC Local One President/Business Manager Lenny Legotte, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, and NYCOSH Executive Director Charlene Obernauer spoke about the importance of ensuring that workers have proper safety training and equipment. They also stressed the importance of passing the Elevator Safety Act, which would help ensure that elevator constructors are trained and licensed.

The ceremony ended with workers and family members reading the names of workers who died in 2015, and leaving a memorial at the site in their memory.
