NewsGuild Launches “What El Diario Means to Me” Campaign

The NewsGuild of New York, CWA recently launched a new “What El Diario Means to Me” campaign, to highlight the importance of the hometown paper. El Diario is the nation’s oldest Spanish-language daily newspaper, and many New Yorkers utilize the paper as an important source of local news. Over the last year, the paper was purchased by Empre Media, an Argentinian company that has fired much of the staff, and is looking to centralize operations on the West Coast.

The campaign is designed to allow everyday New Yorkers to record videos highlighting the importance of El Diario to NY’s Spanish-speaking communities in general, but to individuals, as well. So far, stories have included memories of reading El Diario with a grandparent, and using the paper to learn to read and write in Spanish.

Are you interested in recording a video and showing your support for El Diario, and the role it plays in disseminating local news? If so, e-mail eldiario@nyguild.org for more information
