Janus and Beyond Conference Urges Increased Member Engagement in Face of Attacks on Unions

Today, the Worker Institute at Cornell and the Murphy Institute convened a conference entitled “Janus and Beyond: The Future of Public Sector Unions” to address attacks on labor, and how we keep members engaged.

Attendees heard from a number of speakers from labor including NYC CLC Secretary-Treasurer Janella Hinds, TWU Local 100 President Tony Utano, and DC37 Director of Organizing Barbara Terrelonge.  Queens Council Member/Civil Service and Labor Committee Chair Daneek Miller also attended the conference.

The conference focused on Right to Work, and what unions can do to help ensure that it doesn’t make its way to New York City.

"We are facing a real challenge, but we can use this as an opportunity to grow and become stronger. Working men and women have faced opposition before, and we have emerged victorious.  We can and will do it again, as long as we are committed to standing together," said Janella Hinds, Secretary-Treasurer of the New York City Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO.
