Brooklyn Legal Aid Association Attorneys Walk Out to Protest ICE-Courts Collaboration
This week, hundreds of Legal Aid Society and Brooklyn Legal Services attorneys walked out of Brooklyn Criminal Court to protest Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention of Legal Aid client Genaro Rojas-Hernandez. The attorneys, members of UAW Local 2325, argue that court staff should be banned from collaborating with ICE officers, and called on the Office of Court Administration and Chief Judge Janet DiFiore to implement a “Sanctuary Court” policy, which would prevent such collaboration.
“Our Union will defend our immigrant clients until the end,” said Association of Legal Aid Attorneys President Deborah Wright. “Our members in Brooklyn who walked out did so in protest of discriminatory policies which break up families and restrict our clients’ access to greater justice.”
