1199SEIU And Senator Schumer Urge Passage of Better Care Better Jobs Act

On Tuesday, October 12, Senator Majority Leader Chuck Schumer joined home care members and advocates in the Manhattan headquarters of 1199SEIU to urge Congress to pass President Biden’s Better Care Better Jobs Act. The act would provide $400 billion to expand homecare and community-based organizations, creating more jobs for homecare workers and allow more people to remain in their homes and receive the vital care they need.

1199SEIU home care member Lilieth Clacken stated, “This work is more than a profession; it’s a calling. My client can’t do without me because I am essential to her life. (But) we want to be able to feed our families, pay our bills, and take care of the people who need us.” Sen. Schumer added, “We will fight for this with all our might. And [this bill] will pay homecare workers, so many of whom are women of color struggling with low wages, the salary they deserve as the healthcare heroes that they are.” 1199SEIU represents about 50,000 home health care workers in New York State.
