UHAB Workers Form Union With RWDSU

Last Friday, Urban Homesteading Assistance Board (UHAB) staff announced their decision to form a union with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU), presenting a letter to Executive Director Andy Reicher and Chair of the Board John Warren with a 3-day deadline to voluntarily recognize the union. Unfortunately, that deadline has passed, and so workers this week filed a petition with the NLRB for an immediate election.

Members are committed to creating a UHAB which is safe for all employees: sustainable, democratically controlled, and committed to uprooting white supremacy culture. They are striving for a UHAB workplace that is in greater alignment with the mission and principles under which the organization operates, and one in which staff can best support and build power with HDFC shareholders and tenants. They retain hope that UHAB will do the right thing and voluntarily recognize the union, so that they can withdraw their petition and begin productive dialogue as partners. Workers are asking for support in their demand for voluntary recognition in the following ways:

1. Follow uhabunion on Instagram and Twitter to receive updates and amplify their message.

2. If you know Executive Management or Members of the Board personally, please send them a friendly email directly encouraging them to voluntarily recognize the union and reminding them of the benefits of a unionized shop.
