Nitehawk Workers Unionize with UAW
Workers at Nitehawk Cinema, the movie theater known for pairing first-run and repertory film programming with tableside food and drink service, performed almost entirely in the dark, are petitioning to unionize at their Prospect Park location. More than 70% of employees petitioned for certification with the NLRB last week. Represented by UAW Local 2179, the unit will consist of over 100 full-time and part-time employees including wait staff, line cooks, bartenders and porters.
Due to years of neglect and disregard for employee concerns, upswings in business such as holiday weekends, Barbenheimer, and special events are dependent on the underpaid and overworked staff. These inconsistencies leave the workers physically unsafe and economically vulnerable. Workers are demanding an environment where they are properly compensated for the labor they provide and given the respect they deserve.
