Statement from Vincent Alvarez, President of the New York City Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO, on Amazon’s Decision to Cancel Plans for LIC HQ2

New York, NY - It’s unfortunate that Amazon has chosen to walk away from LIC HQ2, prematurely ending discussions that could have resulted in a mutually beneficial economic development model that respects all workers. This was an opportunity not only to create good jobs, 5000 of which would have been union construction jobs, but also to engage in a meaningful public discourse about the way that Amazon treats its workforce across the board. By their actions, Amazon has demonstrated an unwillingness to allow workers to have a voice at the table in decisions that affect them. New York City, with the greatest workforce in the world, will always be open for business to employers who value everything our city has to offer while respecting the dignity and rights of all working people.
