NYC CLC and UFT Host Labor Women's Power Breakfast

The NYC CLC and UFT recently hosted a Labor Women's Power Breakfast as part of our celebration of Women's History Month in March. The session, which took place at the UFT, included lively panel discussions facilitated by our moderator, NYC CLC Secretary-Treasurer and UFT Vice President for Academic High Schools Janella T. Hinds. Participants included Nancy Hagans, RN, President of the New York State Nurses’ Association; Julie Kelly, General Manager of the NY-NJ Regional Joint Board of Workers United (SEIU) and International Vice-President of Workers United; Patricia White, IATSE Director of Education and Training and President of New York City Theatrical Wardrobe Union, Local 764; Gloria Middleton, President, Communication Workers of America Local 1180; and Kate Shindle, President of Actors’ Equity Association. All of the panelists also serve as members of the Executive Committee of the NYC CLC.

Panelists and members of the audience discussed the importance of having more women engaged in our labor unions, politics and public life. Included in the conversation were reflections on panelists' experience of running for and serving in elected union office; using community leadership positions, such as appointments to non-profit or government boards, as a way to advocate for issues and gain leadership experience; what sacrifices they've made and what challenges they've faced taking on these leadership positions; and what advice they would give to other women who are interested in harnessing their power in their unions and beyond.

Thank you to everyone who attended the event, and please stay posted for future opportunities to engage. And check out more of the morning's photos here!
