Although the “traditional” family—a father who works outside the home and financially supports the children and a mother whose work is keeping the house and raising the children—has been disappearing for more than a generation, our workplaces and government policies have not kept pace with America’s new reality.
Most children are growing up in homes with both parents working or with single parents. One-third of workers don’t have access to paid sick leave, and only 42 percent have paid personal leave. What’s the impact on public health when working people can’t afford to take sick days during a flu epidemic? Who takes care of a sick child? Who’s home to fix dinner and help with homework? Who can dedicate time to a sick elderly parent?
The recession and jobless recovery have complicated life further for working families, when having to leave work for a family emergency could lead to long-term unemployment.

CEO pay for major companies in the United States rose nearly 6% in the past year, as income inequality and the outsourcing of good-paying American jobs have increased.
Employers who stiff their workers or discriminate against them just got a big lift from the Supreme Court, which issued a major ruling Monday making it easier for companies to avoid employee lawsuits. The 5-4 ruling upheld employers’ use of class-action waivers in arbitration agreements.
The AGMA-represented dancers and stage managers of Alvin Ailey rallied with supporters yesterday as part of their fight for a fair contract with pay and benefits that meet industry standards.
In response to a formal rulemaking petition from the Independent Drivers Guild (IDG), New York City’s Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) stated it plans to put forward rules on industry-wide for-hire vehicle driver income and pay transparency later this summer.
The New York City labor movement joins in mourning the passing of Thomas Van Arsdale on May 20th. Thomas, the son of legendary labor leader Harry Van Arsdale, Jr., was an active trade unionist throughout his life as a member of Local 3 International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
