We have a once in a generation opportunity to ensure that the path to a low-carbon future result in good jobs that provide family-sustaining wages and benefits for communities across the state.
Numerous studies have shown that there is major job creation potential from tackling the climate crisis, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and transitioning to a low carbon, sustainable economy.
The public investments we make now will be on a scale not seen since the Great Depression, and they will either further entrench our reliance on fossil fuels or put us on the path to a low-carbon economy. We need to make sure it's the latter. We also need to make sure that the jobs we create are good, family-supporting, community-sustaining jobs; we can’t afford to lose another decade of wage growth like we did coming out of the last recession.

This past Friday, Climate Jobs NY joined Governor Hochul, Sec. Haaland and our Wind Works Long Island partners in East Hampton to break ground on New York's first offshore wind project, South Fork Wind.
Today, Climate Jobs New York (CJNY), in partnership with Cornell University, released “A CLIMATE FOR CHANGE, A CLIMATE JOBS ROADMAP FOR NEW YORK CITY,” a report representing labor’s climate jobs agenda for New York City.
The AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust (HIT) is helping to finance the $337.7 million new construction of 311 West 42nd Street, a mixed-use development comprised of 330 residential rental units, 83 of which are affordable, and 41,678 square feet of rentable retail space.

In Governor Hochul’s State of the State this week, she signaled important steps forward on climate action that creates good union jobs, including significant investment in the offshore wind supply chain, movement toward necessary transmission upgrades, and much-needed investments in schools.

As we look back on the past year, we're reflecting on the continuing challenges that the New York City labor movement has faced, but also on the significant ground we’ve gained and the enormous potential ahead of us.
