We have a once in a generation opportunity to ensure that the path to a low-carbon future result in good jobs that provide family-sustaining wages and benefits for communities across the state.
Numerous studies have shown that there is major job creation potential from tackling the climate crisis, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and transitioning to a low carbon, sustainable economy.
The public investments we make now will be on a scale not seen since the Great Depression, and they will either further entrench our reliance on fossil fuels or put us on the path to a low-carbon economy. We need to make sure it's the latter. We also need to make sure that the jobs we create are good, family-supporting, community-sustaining jobs; we can’t afford to lose another decade of wage growth like we did coming out of the last recession.

On Wednesday, just ahead of Earth Day, the United Federation of Teachers, District Council 37, 32BJ SEIU, the New York City Building and Construction Trades Council, the New York City Central Labor Council, Climate Jobs NY and others launched the Carbon Free and Healthy Schools campaign.
The New York City Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO strongly supports the East Side Coastal Resiliency Project, which will help to protect not only against storm damage and flooding on the scale of Hurricane Sandy, but also against the long-term threat of continuing sea-level rise.
The budget deal passed in Albany this week represents a crucial step forward for promoting good, family-sustaining, community-supporting union jobs in the renewable energy sector.

Yesterday, working people across our nation flooded the Senate phone lines with support for the PRO Act as part of the AFL-CIO National Day of Action. Our outdated labor laws are no longer strong enough to protect us in the workplace.
